Over time it can be difficult to know what clothes to choose and wear, and it can be challenging discovering what your true personal style is. Far too often, you can end up sleepwalking into clothes purchases and ending up regretting the choices you have made. To ensure that your closet is filled with beautiful items of clothing that make you feel good, you have to be decisive. So, to fully ensure that your closet is a reflection of you, what do you need to focus on doing?
Decluttering and Sorting Out
To begin with, you have to start sorting out the clothes and accessories you currently own. You are unable to move forward and focus on building a new style if you are harboring far too much (wanted stuff). Decluttering and getting rid of your clothes doesn’t have to be as heart-wrenching as you initially think. The thought of simply throwing all of your clothes and accessories in the trash might be filling you with dread, but it doesn’t have to be this way. When you are decluttering, you are focusing on only removing the items you no longer need, want, or wear. Do not panic, as decluttering and sorting out is not a full purge.
What to Do with Clothes and Accessories
When you are decluttering and establishing what items you want to keep (and what you want to get rid of), you may come across a few pieces such as old t-shirts that you want to save or even old sweatshirts from your college days. Keeping everything would take up too much space in your closet, so you could think about donating good condition items to charity and thrift stores. You don’t have to get rid of everything, and sometimes it is nice to hold on to cherished items or memories. To do this, you could also think about having blankets made from clothes that you want to hold on to.
Influence and Inspiration
Your personal style is representative of you, and you will always sway towards certain colors or cuts. However, sometimes it is good to look to others for influence and inspiration. You can often find a lot of influence and inspiration by looking at what celebrities are wearing and even keeping an eye on what your friends and family members are wearing. Sometimes just having a push in a different style direction, or even seeing something on another person, can give you the confidence you need to adapt your style.
Love Your Colors
Everyone has a palette of colors and tones that work for them and leave them looking fabulous. Discovering just what colors suit you and finding out what shades highlight your complexion is always a good step to take. When you know what colors suit you (perhaps from having a color consultation with a stylist), you can then begin to purchase key pieces to build your closet.
There are lots of clothes to buy and lots of styles to choose from, and quite often, you can lose your sense of personal style if you hit the shops too regularly. Avoid shopping a lot while you are establishing what you want to wear and how you want to feel to ensure that you do not end up overwhelmed and with a closet full of clothes you don’t even like.
